Stefan Liv and Yaroslavl Lokomotivis

I was eating lunch, by myself, at a restaurant the other day. Reading the news about the plane crash that decimated a whole hockey team in Russia on september 7th. The paper is a few weeks old, but i had put it away to read it later, because it was just so chocking and sad. I was reading about it in details now and seeing pictures of lives that are gone, ruined. Never the same again.  Sadness and pain for  many people… I just burst into tears and had to run into the public restroom and just cry my eyes out.

The team photo of Yaroslavl Lokomotivis, with beloved swedish goalie Stefan Liv and all of those young men stuck onto my retina and mind.  Some as young as 18 years old, wonderful and exiting lifes ahead of them. A catastrophe that killed 44 people just like that. Many fans have vented their anger. They want to know – must know – who is to blame for the deaths of those who are near them. An explanation, even though all the answers are right in front of them. Pilot error or technical malfunctions, an absolutely unprecedented tragedy.

Next page –  Stefan Liv. His family, his wife Anna, who he had just married few months ago and his two little boys who will no longer meet their father.  At the memorial service in Kinnarp Arena in Jönköping where 7000 people came to pay their respects, Stefan Liv’s youngest son… a couple of years old burst out “Pappa” when seeing the photo of his daddy. Man… this is just too much …

My husband, son and daughter are hockey players and I have watched many games with goaltender Stefan Liv. The medals in the Olympics and world championships in 2006. His assistance for the silver medal in 2004 and bronze medals 2002 and 2009. He seemed so full of life, funny and gentle. I specifically remember the flips on the ice right after his team had won.

Liv played 10 seasons and won Sweden’s Eliteserien three times with HV71 before moving to Russia in 2010. As a mark of respect, HV71 have said that all players will wear a small number one on their shirt this season, but the number one jersey formerly worn by Liv will never be worn again.

I am often sad about things that happens in this world. Tragedies and people loosing their love ones. War, cruelty, accidents. My heart burst every time and my little problems seem so small.

Somebody said that “we are seldom happy with what we now have, but would go to pieces if we lost any part of it”. Makes you think …
